How to Treat Leg Veins for Softer, Smoother Legs

Do you have troublesome spider veins crisscrossing their way across your legs? Visible leg veins can not only negatively impact your confidence and self-esteem but may also cause discomfort and pain.

We’re here to provide information; with our dermatologist-recommended leg vein treatments, you can achieve softer, smoother, more even-toned legs you love to look at in the mirror.

How to Treat Leg Veins

At the Center for Surgical Dermatology, our board-certified physicians use a few different leg vein treatments to help patients experience relief from spider and varicose veins. These include sclerotherapy, laser treatments, and lifestyle recommendations.

Sclerotherapy is one of the most common spider and varicose vein treatments due to its effectiveness, safety, and long-standing reputation within the dermatology space.

Sclerotherapy works to treat leg veins by using a sclerosing solution that damages and swells the blood vessel, which forces blood flow to reroute through a healthier vein nearby. Over time, the treated vein turns into scar tissue and is absorbed into the body, disappearing completely as the area heals.

Laser Treatments

While sclerotherapy is typically the most common treatment for spider veins and varicose veins, laser treatments are slowly increasing in popularity.

This is because lasers are not only effective at reducing the visibility of leg veins, but they are also less invasive and require no needles during treatment, unlike sclerotherapy. Even better, lasers for leg veins can be combined with other treatments, like lasers for skin discoloration, to target several skin conditions in one session.

At the Center for Surgical Dermatology, we utilize a vascular laser to treat leg veins. This type of laser targets broken blood vessels and skin discoloration. It works to treat spider and blue veins by causing them to collapse, turn into scar tissue, and be reabsorbed into the body.

Furthermore, the specific laser we use for spider and varicose veins only targets compromised blood vessels, minimizing damage to the surrounding skin and reducing the risk of unwanted complications.

It’s important to note that laser treatments for leg veins are not an ideal option for those with deeper, painful, or more prominent varicose veins. In this instance, referral to a vein center may be necessary.

Lifestyle Recommendations for Leg Veins

In addition to our dermatologist-recommended leg vein treatments above, there are certain steps you can take in your everyday life to improve the look of spider and varicose veins. Furthermore, these may also help prevent the formation, which is key for keeping your legs in tip-top shape.

Our dermatologist recommends the following self-care techniques to improve leg veins:

  • Exercising
  • Elevating the legs
  • Walking every 30 minutes if you sit for long periods of time
  • Wearing compressions stockings/socks
