Using Your Own Plasma To Combat Hair Loss? Yes, And Here’s What You Need To Know About PRP

Using your own plasma to combat hair loss? Yes, and here’s what you need to know about PRP

By Deepa C. Lingam, MD

“Apply Rogaine and take prescription medication.” For so long, these have been the go-to treatment options for hair loss. While these have helped a multitude of patients regrow hair, it’s more than exciting to finally have the ability to offer a new treatment to patients dealing with hair loss.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has shown to have high success rates in both men and women with androgenetic alopecia, or male/female pattern hair loss. Because of the countless studies revealing its effectiveness, we’ve already begun performing these treatments on our own patients and experiencing the same great results.

Here are the details on PRP for hair loss

With PRP therapy for hair loss, we’re extracting the PRP from the patient’s own blood and injecting it into the scalp. Since these platelets bring a lot of different growth factors and nutrients to the hair follicles, they help stimulate hair growth by encouraging the growth phase cycle while increasing the density and count of the hair.

A step-by-step look at the PRP treatment for hair loss

Prior to coming in for their appointment, we ask that the patient drink a lot of water and be well hydrated as well as stop any medications that are antiplatelet such as Aspirin or blood thinners.

Once the patient comes into the office, we draw their blood and use a centrifuge to spin it down so that we can extract the PRP. During this time, we use a Zimmer cryo-cooler that blows on the patient’s scalp to help cool it to a point that the injections aren’t as noticeable.

Next, we inject the PRP into the scalp, which usually entails about 20-30 injections, taking no more than 10 minutes.

Once the injections are done, the patient doesn’t have to do anything special. They can go about their day and even shower that evening, though they will have some sensitivity and discomfort for a few days just because of the injections.

The Results: How long does PRP last?

We typically recommend that patients do PRP therapy once a month for three months and every 4-6 months after that. It’s a long-term treatment and anytime the patient chooses to stop, they do risk losing those results.

Will PRP be effective for your hair loss?

Overall, PRP therapy is a great treatment option for those with male or female pattern alopecia because it’s shown to be highly effective with very little risks. Many patients also like the fact that we’re utilizing their own blood so there’s no foreign material being injected into the scalp.

As with most other hair loss treatments, it’s great to use in conjunction with Rogaine, medications for hair loss, and even the low laser therapy brush. Remember, when it comes to hair loss, combination therapy is going to give you the most pronounced results.

Does PRP work perfectly for everyone experiencing hair loss? No, but you and your dermatologist can determine if it’s going to be an effective treatment for you!
