Reconstructive Plastic Surgery

What is Reconstructive Surgery?

In many cases, skin cancer treatment requires excising (cutting out) a portion of the cancerous tissue and surrounding skin, which may impact the form, function, and appearance of the treated area. Reconstructive surgery—sometimes referred to as reconstructive plastic surgery—is a specialized procedure that aims to restore form and function, reduce scarring, optimize healing, and minimize the need for additional plastic surgery after skin cancer removal and treatment.

Furthermore, if the skin cancer is located in a sensitive area, such as the lips, nose, and ears, reconstructive surgery is essential for restoring a natural appearance and normal function of the area.

QUESTIONS

Reconstructive Surgery FAQs

Obtain a better understanding of reconstructive surgery by reading the FAQs section. Our board-certified dermatologists answer common questions and concerns, such as when reconstructive surgery is used, how it is performed, and what you should know about reconstruction after skin cancer removal at the Center for Surgical Dermatology.

In most cases, reconstructive surgery at the Center for Surgical Dermatology is performed out of medical necessity, which means many insurance plans cover this type of procedure.

However, coverage is not guaranteed for all insurance plans. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to get more information on what types of procedures are covered under your specific insurance plan.

During reconstructive surgery, your surgeon will use specific closures and techniques to minimize scarring potential, optimize functionality, and address other irregularities to improve the appearance of the area after skin cancer or lesion removal.

There are many times when wounds heal optimally on their own. This is also known as healing by second intention. If this is the best option for healing of your specific wound, your surgeon will review this option with you.

The main wound reconstruction techniques we use at the Center for Surgical Dermatology include:

  • Primary Closure – The wound is simply stitched up side to side with sutures to foster optimal healing.
  • Skin Flap – Nearby tissue is freed up and rearranged to cover the area.
  • Skin Graft – A section of skin is transferred from a distant donor site to cover the area.

For more information on how reconstructive surgery works and why it is important, reach out to one of our board-certified dermatologists. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have!

At the Center for Surgical Dermatology, our dermatologists will perform reconstructive plastic surgery on the same day, immediately following Mohs surgery or skin cancer/lesion removal.

All of our surgical procedures are done in our state-of-the-art surgical office and we use local anesthesia, rather than general anesthesia, for a safer, more comfortable procedure, and a shorter recovery time afterwards. Our Mohs surgeons are all fellowship-trained and board-certified in both dermatology and dermatologic surgery.

This depends on the size of the affected area. In most cases, reconstruction takes less than one hour. Before your skin cancer treatment and reconstructive surgery, your surgeon will go over the details of the procedure so you can get a better idea of what to expect.

Reconstruction is one of the best steps an individual can take to restore the health and appearance of their skin after undergoing an invasive skin cancer removal treatment. The benefits of this specialized dermatology treatment include:

  • Restoring Functionality
  • Improving Form and Appearance
  • Minimizing Scarring
  • Addressing Irregularities
  • Fostering Optimal Healing
  • Reducing Recovery Time

If you have additional questions regarding why reconstruction after skin cancer removal is important, contact the Center for Surgical Dermatology to speak to one of our experienced providers.

The recovery period after reconstructive surgery depends on several factors, such as the extent of the skin cancer, size of the area treated, type of closure your surgeon used, and your overall level of health.

Before your reconstructive surgery in Westerville, Ohio, your surgeon will explain the details of your procedure, including the estimated recovery time. If you have any additional questions about your procedure and aftercare, we recommend consulting with your surgeon.
