What is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxic protein that dermatologists use in small doses to prevent muscle movement and reduce the depth of wrinkles in the target area. Botox can be used in various regions of the face, including:

  • Horizontal lines on the forehead
  • Glabellar lines (also known as frown lines or 11s)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Lines around the mouth and chin
  • Excessive sweating

QUESTIONS

Botox FAQs

As with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks associated with Botox.  However, you can mitigate these risks by going to an experienced, licensed professional.

Typically, the results from Botox last for three to four months. However, this time frame can vary based on the individual and how they metabolize the injection.

The cost of Botox injections depends on the number of units required to treat your condition and where the injection is needed.

Botox relaxes and limits the movement of muscles by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. This process helps decrease the appearance of wrinkles that are formed by years of facial expression. Botox also helps with migraines, excessive sweating, and conditions caused by muscle spasms.

Botox is made from botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin produced by an organism known as the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. While neurotoxins can be extremely dangerous, Botox injections are safe. Dermatologists only use a tiny amount of neurotoxins to achieve the desired effect for Botox treatment.
