BOTOX

What is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxic protein that dermatologists use in small doses to prevent muscle movement and reduce the depth of wrinkles in the target area. Botox can be used in various regions of the face, including:

  • Horizontal lines on the forehead
  • Glabellar lines (Also known as frown lines or 11s)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Lines around the mouth and chin

Botox can also alleviate migraine headaches, excessive sweating, and TMJ.

QUESTIONS

Botox FAQs

Botox is a very safe procedure when administered by a board-certified dermatologist, like those at the Center for Surgical Dermatology & Dermatology Associates. Our dermatologists have a deep understanding of facial anatomy and can safely administer Botox injections.

Possible side effects occur when unskilled providers inject Botox in the wrong area. Very rarely, Botox can migrate out of place, causing ptosis (the drooping of a brow or eyelid).

Typically, the results from Botox last for three to four months. However, this time frame can vary based on the individual and how they metabolize the injection.

The cost of Botox injections depends on the number of units required to treat your condition and where the injection is needed. The average Botox treatment can cost anywhere from $350 to $500.

Botox relaxes and limits the movement of muscles by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. This process helps decrease the appearance of wrinkles that are formed by years of facial expression. Botox also helps with migraines, excessive sweating, and conditions caused by muscle spasms.

Botox is made from botulinum toxin type A, a neurotoxin produced by an organism known as the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. While neurotoxins can be extremely dangerous, Botox injections are safe. Dermatologists only use a tiny amount of neurotoxins to achieve the desired effect for Botox treatment.
